When choosing a foundation, do you select one that is lighter than your skin tone?

While buying Estée Lauder foundation today

I took a test, and personally, I like radiant skin, so I chose a shade slightly lighter than my skin tone.

I chose it. Usually BB cream or foundation

When you choose, do you select one that is similar to your skin tone, or do you choose one that is lighter?
