Can I use Vaseline like lip balm?

I heard it's not good, so as for lip care...

Does it matter? I sometimes carry Vaseline in small portions around, but I only use it to exfoliate and don't apply it like lip balm. However, sometimes when I forget my lip balm, I wonder if I should at least use Vaseline. Usually, I just buy lip balm, but it's a hassle to buy it every time.
