It was found that one in ten elementary school students in Korea uses color cosmetics such as lipstick and eyeliner. In response, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety emphasized that while it is best for adolescents to avoid color cosmetics as much as possible, they must follow safe usage guidelines if they do use them.

⚠️ The most common age for elementary school students to start wearing color makeup was 5th grade (32.1%). Sixth graders followed with 24% (243 people). 39% (470 people) of middle and high school students responded that they started in the sixth grade of elementary school. Among the 1,025 people who have used color cosmetics, 36 students (3.5%) said they first used color cosmetics in kindergarten, and as many as 177 students (17.3%) answered that they started in the first to third grades of elementary school.

 

⚠️In this survey 38.9% of elementary school students responded that they obtain information related to cosmetics through YouTube and Instagram. In fact, content such as "kindergartener makeup," "elementary school makeup," and "student cosmetic recommendations" can commonly be found on YouTube and various social networking services (SNS). On these platforms, teenagers recommend makeup products for school or share makeup techniques.

 

The increase in low-cost cosmetics sold through channels such as Daiso and C-commerce (Chinese e-commerce) has also contributed to lowering the entry barrier for color cosmetics. Daiso sells various cosmetics, including foundation, lipstick, and mascara, for prices ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 won. Even products sold at higher prices elsewhere, such as Olive Young, are lowering their prices by reducing volume or simplifying packaging. Ultra-low-cost cosmetics can also be easily found on AliExpress and Temu. For example, a "Korean Style 16-Color Eyeshadow Palette" is being sold on AliExpress for just 500 won. Because the price is so low, even teenagers can purchase it without hesitation.

 

⚠️Experts are concerned that starting to wear color cosmetics at too young an age can cause adverse skin reactions. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety "It is best to avoid color cosmetics as much as possible during adolescence when hormone secretion is active," they advised, adding, "However, if you do use them, it is important to test for allergic reactions by applying a small amount to the skin beforehand and to wash your face thoroughly afterward." also "They stated, 'Due to the nature of color cosmetics, they are often shared with friends, so caution is required as there is a possibility of spoilage or contamination.'"

 

⚠️When using cosmetics, it is also advisable to follow precautions such as checking the expiration date, storing in a cool place away from direct sunlight, refraining from using on wounded areas, keeping hands clean during use, keeping cosmetic tools clean, closing the lid properly after use, and stopping use if the color or scent of the contents changes.
