Is there a whitening cream that is really effective?

I was born with a dark complexion, so whitening has always been just a dream of mine. But if I apply a whitening cream, will my skin really get even a little bit whiter? Even if it's just a temporary effect, I wonder if there is a cream that actually works for whitening. If there is, I'd love to buy one and try it out.
