Should I throw away sunscreen that is more than a year old after opening?

You know how sunscreen is usually said to last a year after opening? But I'm wondering if it has completely lost its sunscreen function.
Or, if there is even a little bit of barrier function left, I think it would be okay to apply it to the arm...
I usually end up throwing away a lot of bottles before finishing the whole thing, so I just wanted to ask a question.
