How to apply foundation

My makeup artist said Lancôme Teint Idole is good, so

I want to buy it, but it cakes and smudges every time I apply foundation, so I end up only using cushions.

Even though I pay attention to my base makeup, it never seems to provide nice coverage, so I end up not using it. Do you have any tips for applying it well?
