Is it dead skin cells that come off when using an exfoliator?

I tend to use exfoliants a lot, especially during seasons like this when skin becomes rough. I am asking this question because I am curious about what exactly that dead skin-like substance is that comes off as soon as I apply the exfoliant to my face. How is it possible for something like dead skin to come off immediately after applying an exfoliant?
At first, I was really worried about using the exfoliator because I wondered if it contained some substance that caused it to react and slough off as soon as it touched my skin. Why? Could dead skin cells, like dirt, slough off immediately after application? Even if it is dirt, I find it suspicious that it sloughs off so quickly.
Because I had these doubts, I ended up not using exfoliants.
To ask one more time, is what comes off immediately after using an exfoliator dirt or dead skin cells?
Or could it be that the product itself contains a substance that causes a reaction?
I've been curious about this since I was young, but now that I'm older, I'm finally asking.

각질제거제를 쓰면 바로 때처럼 밀려나오는 건 실제 각질이 아니라 제품 제형 특성 때문일 가능성이 커요. 필링젤이나 고마쥬 타입은 고분자 성분이 피부 위에서 뭉치면서 때처럼 보이는 거라서 크게 걱정하지 않아도 된다고 생각해요

제품 특성인 것 같어요! 근데 각질제거를 하고나서는 확실히 뽀드득해지는 느낌이 들어서 좋아요

찾아보니까 대부분의 경우 실제 각질이라기보다는 제품 성분이 뭉쳐서 생기는 것이라고 하더라고요. 특히 젤 타입이나 필링젤에 들어 있는 셀룰로오스 같은 성분이 피부를 문지를 때 뭉치면서 때처럼 보이는 덩어리가 만들어지는 경우가 많다고 해요. ㅜㅜ 거기에 피부 표면에 있던 약간의 각질이나 피지, 먼지가 같이 섞이면서 더 때처럼 보일 수 있다고 하더라고요.
