Why do people who have never worn makeup before look somehow uglier when they get it done at a salon?

I thought I would look pretty if I went to a salon, but why do I look somehow uglier?

Is it because it feels awkward since it's not a familiar face... or is it because the makeup expert's style and preferences don't match mine?
