How much moisturizer should I use for one application?

My skin is dry and prone to flaking easily, so I always struggle with controlling the amount of moisturizer I apply.
If I apply too much, my skin feels heavy, and if I apply too little, it feels dry, so I am curious about the correct guidelines for using moisturizer.

Especially in the summer, I want a lightweight feel while still maintaining sufficient moisture, but it isn't easy.
Is there a specific optimal amount of moisturizer to use for dry skin?
I did hear that I should put a pea-sized amount on the back of my hand, but I'm not sure if that is the right amount for my whole face.
