Wrinkles around the mouth from using lipstick incorrectly
It is said that products that help with appearance management are selling well since the start of the new year. Among the numerous beauty products, there are many high-priced lipsticks. There are products referred to as Han Ye-seul lipstick, Park Min-young lipstick, Gong Hyo-jin lipstick, etc., and are so popular that they are sold out despite costing over 40,000 won.
However, just because a lipstick is expensive doesn't mean it is necessarily good. It is necessary to use a product that suits you.
The most common causes of contact dermatitis on the lips are lipstick, toothpaste, and dentures. Since these are essential items for daily life, caution is required when using them. The skin on the lips is thinner than that of the face and has a high concentration of blood vessels, so absorption occurs more readily compared to other parts of the body. Therefore, even if lipsticks used repeatedly contain only small amounts of nickel, preservatives, pigments, or fragrances, they are prone to causing contact dermatitis. In particular, frequent use of color cosmetics containing many chemical ingredients can cause severe irritants to act as skin irritants, potentially damaging the lips.
According to a 2013 report by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, cadmium was detected in 16 out of 32 cosmetic products in the United States, chromium in 22, and lead in 24. An independent investigation by a broadcasting company last year found lead in a total of 7 out of 17 types of lipstick products distributed domestically. Furthermore, caution is required as the pigments and dyes used in lipsticks may also contain irritating ingredients.
However, people rarely check the full list of ingredients when buying lipstick. The color is usually the primary factor in the selection. Therefore, caution is required when using it; if your lips become cracked or rough, it is best to stop using it immediately. It is strictly forbidden to moisten your lips with saliva just because they are dry.
If you have no choice but to use lipstick, it is best to select a product that is pearl-free and light in color whenever possible, as it causes relatively less irritation. After returning home, you should wipe your lips thoroughly to ensure no lipstick residue remains. It is recommended to use a lip remover; simply soak a cotton pad with the remover, place it on your lips for about 5 seconds, and then gently wipe to remove the lipstick cleanly. You must tuck your lips taut and wipe thoroughly once more, even into the vertical creases, to completely remove all lipstick residue.
If rough lips are left untreated, vertical wrinkles will begin to form around them. If this persists, fine lines around the mouth will appear, and makeup may smudge into these lines, potentially leading to a situation where applying makeup becomes impossible. To prevent wrinkles around the mouth, rough lips must be moisturized. It is recommended to apply a highly moisturizing eye cream to the lips or frequently use lip moisturizers such as Vaseline or lip balm.
