Since I have combination skin that is oily and dehydrated, I wanted a product that was non-sticky, moisturizing, and filled with hydration from deep within. The essence isn't completely watery; it has a slight viscosity, though it does wobble a bit. Since it isn't sticky and can be patted on with your fingers, it's great for exfoliating. While the moisturizing effect is perfect when applied with the cream, the essence alone feels like it fills your skin with hydration.
