For morning face washing, is it better to wash with water or use a cleansing product?

I'm asking this question because I've been struggling with it every time I wash my face in the morning lately.
The cleansing foam I usually use makes my skin feel too tight and dry when I use it in the morning.
Since I wear makeup or apply sunscreen in the evening, I am currently using a product with decent cleansing power.
But if I use that product in the morning, I feel like it's too drying.
I heard that some people wash their face with water in the morning.
I'm not sure if just rinsing with water is enough to cleanse... it feels a bit unsatisfying, so it's difficult for me.
I'm thinking about buying a separate mildly acidic product, but would washing my face with just water be enough...?
I'm actually more conflicted because opinions are divided; some say cleansing too often is bad, for example.
