Epidermal cysts occur when the sebaceous glands in the dermis become blocked. They are particularly prone to forming in frequently moving areas, such as the chin. They can also develop in wound sites following trauma, or form when waste products accumulate inside the body without being properly expelled. In other words, epidermal cysts develop when epithelial cells proliferate within the dermis during the wound healing process following trauma or burns. They can also occur secondarily due to other skin conditions, such as folliculitis or boils.

There is no specific way to prevent epidermal cysts. However, it is advisable to avoid excessive scrubbing with an exfoliating towel during bathing or scratching with unclean fingernails.
