The effects of caffeine on the skin

Korea is a country with high coffee consumption. In fact, if you just look around the streets, you can see long lines at cafes, and it is easy to spot people heading to work every morning with coffee in hand. However, you are likely well aware that drinking coffee frequently is not good for your health.

However, while coffee is not good for the body, it is not uncommon to see opinions suggesting that caffeine can be good for the skin. Is that really true? Today, let's take a look at the effects of caffeine on the skin.

First, caffeine not only helps relieve fatigue but also improves concentration. When consumed in the morning, it promotes diuresis and stimulates the kidneys, helping to quickly eliminate accumulated waste. Additionally, it has heart-stimulating effects, so moderate amounts are said to be beneficial for heart failure.

Above all, coffee contains antioxidants. Representative examples include chlorogenic acid, melanoidins, and polyphenols. These play a role in preventing cell damage caused by free radicals in the body. As such, the fact is that coffee can be beneficial for skin health as well, more than you might think!

However, too much of anything is harmful. Since caffeine aids in diuresis, it also depletes moisture, making it easy for the skin to become dry. Dry skin makes a person look tired. What happens if the skin becomes dry and the temperature rises? The skin's barrier breaks down.

This can cause skin problems, and if consumed in large quantities, it can stimulate the secretion of the hormone cortisol, which may lead to sleep disorders and cause changes in skin tone, such as making the skin oily.

In other words, while caffeine can be beneficial for the skin in moderation, consuming it excessively beyond the recommended amount can actually be harmful. Please keep in mind that drinking plenty of water while consuming a moderate amount can also be helpful.
