Cleansing methods according to skin type

Excessive washing breaks the skin's protective barrier.

Dr. Ban Jae-yong, Representative Director of Banobagi Dermatology, states, “Due to a negative perception of oil, double or triple cleansing regardless of skin type can actually lead to dry skin.” Particularly during times of severe fine dust like these, many people wash their faces until they feel squeaky clean under the pretext of deep cleansing; however, caution is advised because this removes the essential oils needed by the stratum corneum, which can be a direct cause of disrupting the oil-moisture balance. Of course, it is self-evident that leaving sebum and sweat unchecked can lead to skin troubles. The key is to make an effort to keep the skin clean through effective cleansing tailored to your skin type while simultaneously preserving the oil-moisture balance.

dry skin Since your skin is depleted of both moisture and oil, you should not wash your face excessively. A water temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius is ideal; be careful, as temperatures that are too high can strip away both oil and moisture, causing the skin to become even drier. If you have sensitive skin, it is also best to avoid finishing with cold water. In the morning, it is recommended to wash your face with only water.

oily skin It is more important to wash your face thoroughly, even if only once, rather than washing it frequently. Wash the T-zone, where sebum secretion is high, meticulously and rinse with lukewarm water. Finally, rinse with cold water to tighten the pores. Be careful not to scrub too hard to remove sebum, as this can actually dry out and sensitize the skin. About once a week, use a steam towel to melt sebum inside the pores and remove dead skin cells accumulated on the surface.

sensitive skin To avoid irritating the skin, lather the cleanser sufficiently and wash your face with a gentle massage. Avoid water that is too hot or alkaline cleansers.

Acne-prone skin Use a facial cleanser with exfoliating properties or antibacterial ingredients. It is best to use gel or powder type cleansers with low oil content whenever possible. If you are receiving acne treatment at a clinic, you must maintain a proper balance between exfoliation and moisturization. The appropriate frequency for washing your face is about twice a day on average. Since using antibacterial cleansers too frequently can actually lead to an increase in resistant bacteria, use them only when necessary.
