Learn the best skincare tips for sensitive skin
1. Wash your face with a mildly acidic cleanser
Since sensitive skin is very delicate, you need to be more careful when choosing a facial cleanser.
Most facial cleansers are alkaline, so continuous use can damage the protective barrier of thin and sensitive skin or cause various skin problems and itching.
Therefore, it is recommended that people with sensitive skin use a mildly acidic facial cleanser with a pH range of 4.5 to 6.5.
Also, avoid cleansers with overly strong cleansing power or exfoliating effects, as well as those containing potentially irritating ingredients such as fragrances or preservatives. Instead, I recommend using cleansers containing ingredients like aloe, chamomile, and green tea, which help moisturize and soothe the skin.
2. Do 'skip care'
Skip-care, also known as a cosmetic diet, refers to applying only the minimum number of basic skincare products.
Since sensitive skin often has various complex skin concerns and can react sensitively to even very mild irritation, it is advisable to minimize the steps and ingredients in your basic skincare routine.
For generally sensitive skin, 'toner + lotion + moisturizer' is sufficient, while for oily sensitive skin, it is best to apply just 'toner + moisturizer' lightly.
Also, since you don't know which ingredients you might react to, it is safer to choose cosmetics that do not have too many different ingredients.
3. Avoid cotton pads
For sensitive skin with a compromised skin barrier, the act of wiping the face with a cotton pad can itself irritate the skin. Therefore, when applying toner, it is recommended to spread it on clean hands, cup your face, and gently pat it. Additionally, it is recommended to use cotton pads thoroughly soaked with toner only after washing your face in the evening, and only when wearing makeup.
4. Check the full list of ingredients
When choosing a skin toner or lotion suitable for sensitive skin, it is best to select a light formula that does not contain much oil. For a moisturizing cream, I recommend one containing panthenol, centella extract, and madecassoside, which soothe sensitive skin and help restore a damaged skin barrier.
In addition, it is essential to avoid parabens, phenoxyethanol, artificial fragrances, artificial colors, and volatile alcohols (ethanol, denatured alcohol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol), as these can irritate not only sensitive skin but also healthy skin.
