AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
It is water-soluble and particularly effective at removing dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. Due to its water-soluble nature, it cannot penetrate pores, but true to its water-soluble properties, it provides hydration. Additionally, it is said to be beneficial for improving pigmentation and skin elasticity.
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
BHA (Bacterial Hydroxylate) is an oil-soluble form of salicylic acid, making it effective not only for exfoliating the skin but also for removing sebum (including blackheads and whiteheads). This is because its oil-soluble nature allows it to penetrate deep into the pores. Additionally, salicylic acid, a component of BHA, has anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for managing acne-prone skin that requires antibacterial action while simultaneously removing sebum from within the pores. However, because BHA penetrates deep into the pores to cleanse sebum, it is more irritating than AHA.
PHA (Poly Hydroxy Acid)
PHA is a next-generation exfoliant created following the craze for BHA and AHA. PHA contains gluconolactone, an ingredient effective for exfoliation and skin texture improvement. Because its molecular size is larger than that of BHA or AHA, it absorbs into the skin more slowly, resulting in less skin irritation. Like AHA, it is water-soluble, so it provides hydration along with exfoliation, and strengthens the skin barrier with its antioxidant properties. In addition, it is said to offer anti-aging and skin tone improvement effects, so there is a reason it is currently being advertised as a celebrity peeling product.
