How to use sunscreen

High SPF is a NO; you should reapply every three hours instead. It is a misconception to think that a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates superior UV protection. A high SPF means a higher concentration of harmful benzene ring compounds. In fact, a higher SPF can be more dangerous. While an SPF of 1 blocks UV rays for about 15 to 20 minutes, an SPF of 20 blocks them for 300 minutes, or approximately 5 hours. It is safer to use a sunscreen with a lower SPF and reapply it every three hours.

2. Selecting Sunscreen According to Skin Type If you have sensitive skin, such as that affected by atopic dermatitis, you should choose a sunscreen that is free of PABA, which frequently causes allergic reactions. Since chemical sunscreens can cause eye irritation or skin itching, you should select a physical sunscreen. Additionally, for acne-prone skin prone to frequent breakouts or oily skin, you should use a sunscreen containing oil-free or non-comedogenic ingredients. For severely dry skin that dries out easily, you should choose a product with a high moisture content.

3. Apply an appropriate amount of sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside. When using sunscreen, controlling the amount is the most important factor. Although the recommended dosage of 2 mg/cm² (the size of three peas) is quite a large amount, applying too little will not provide UV protection, so you should apply the appropriate amount and allow time for it to be fully absorbed. In the case of chemical sunscreens, the ingredients require a certain amount of time after application to undergo the chemical reaction for UV protection, so it is best to apply them 30 minutes before going out. However, since physical sunscreens work by forming a barrier on the skin, you can go outside immediately after application.

4. Be sure to cleanse after use. You must wash off sunscreen thoroughly to ensure no residue remains. There is absolutely no benefit to leaving sunscreen residue on your skin. You must wipe it off completely as soon as you return home. Thorough cleansing is essential because leftover sunscreen can mix with skin impurities and cause breakouts.

5. Do not blindly trust sunscreen; use physical barriers. There are ways to block UV rays using masks, clothing, or hats without applying chemical sunscreens to your skin. It is best to choose a method that is safer for you. Instead of relying solely on sunscreen, it is much better to use physical barriers—such as wide-brimmed hats or parasols—in conjunction with sunscreen.
