Removing eyelash makeup without irritation

The eyelids contain about 100 to 150 eyelashes that protect the eyeball from harmful external stimuli. However, since it is not easy to cleanly remove eye makeup, such as eyeliner or mascara drawn right above the eyelashes, without irritation, it is natural to look for a product that is effective at cleansing and does not irritate the eyes.

Recently, there have been concerns regarding products advertised using a form of "fear marketing" that emphasizes the need to thoroughly remove eye makeup by magnifying images of eyelid inflammation and yellowish sebum. This raises worries that excessive cleansing can irritate the skin. It is necessary to completely remove eye makeup, as incomplete removal can cause inflammation. However, using strong cleansers too frequently or repeatedly rubbing with cotton swabs to check for remaining makeup out of fear can irritate the eyelids and lead to contact dermatitis. Furthermore, wiping very close to the eyelashes with a cotton swab to remove makeup residue can irritate the eyes and potentially damage the cornea; repeated such behavior can also irritate the eyelashes, potentially causing permanent eyelash loss, so caution is required.

The process of removing makeup can irritate the skin; the cleansing power of the makeup remover can be a cause of irritation, as can the rubbing involved. According to one report, in patients with atopic dermatitis, using a makeup remover with weak cleansing power increased the frequency of rubbing, leading to a worsening of the condition. Conversely, using a makeup remover with superior cleansing power reduced the frequency of rubbing, resulting in an improvement in dermatitis. Particularly for the thin and sensitive skin of the eyelids, it is necessary to select a product that considers both cleansing power and the amount of rubbing.

It is not recommended to focus solely on thoroughly removing eye makeup by rubbing the inside of your eyelids with a cotton swab every day to check for residue, as this can cause irritant contact dermatitis. It is necessary to wash your face regularly after understanding your individual makeup habits and how effectively it is removed. Remember that rubbing with a cotton swab is irritating, so reduce the frequency of this action. Additionally, to minimize eyelid irritation, it is necessary to avoid rubbing or touching your eyes with dirty hands and to reduce the habit of scratching your eyelids.
