Does toothpaste help with acne?

Triclosan, which was included in toothpaste to prevent gingivitis, was an ingredient often used not only in toothpaste but also in acne cosmetics because it was effective in reducing bacteria that cause gingivitis. However, the issue regarding triclosan and acne subsided after the FDA banned its use in 2017. In addition, ingredients contained in toothpaste, such as hydrogen peroxide, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium lauryl sulfate, are also used because it is believed to help acne-prone skin with excessive sebum production by drying out the skin.

However, using toothpaste on acne-prone skin is not recommended because ingredients contained in toothpaste, such as fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, and citric acid, can irritate the skin, and components like fragrances can cause allergic contact dermatitis. This is because some ingredients in toothpaste can irritate the skin and, if used repeatedly, can cause contact dermatitis, which in severe cases can leave widespread hyperpigmentation on the skin.

The main ingredient of toothpaste is an abrasive that removes foreign substances adhering to the tooth surface and whitens the teeth. It also contains surfactants, disinfectants and deodorizers for oral hygiene, and fluoride and preservatives for cavity prevention. Since teeth are hard and the method of use—such as rinsing with water and spitting out the toothpaste—is different, applying toothpaste to the skin should never be done, as it can cause skin irritation.

If acne repeatedly appears in the same areas, it is more helpful to keep your skin clean rather than following common folk remedies. It is recommended to cleanse your skin twice a day using a facial cleanser, such as a foam cleanser, to prevent clogged pores. Since rubbing with a sponge or cleansing tool can cause acne to burst, leading to redness and hyperpigmentation, it is recommended to lather the cleanser in your palms and apply it with your fingertips before washing. Additionally, as hair oil can trigger acne on the forehead, regular shampooing is necessary; if you use hair essence, it is more beneficial to shampoo in the evening rather than the morning. If you have a habit of touching your face with your hands, acne can worsen due to dirt and dust on your hands, so you should try to break this habit.
