Since I have dry skin, I make sure to drink plenty of water in small amounts frequently. Also, while washing my face thoroughly is important, I wash by patting my face with water. This is when I use lukewarm water instead of foam cleanser for my morning wash. I do this because I don't have much time in the mornings.
In the evening, since I use sunscreen, BB cream, or powder, I thoroughly wash my face with cleansing oil and foam cleanser, and then give myself a massage by patting the water several times to help with absorption. After doing that, wiping my face with toner on a cotton pad feels great because my face doesn't feel tight. I've tried using face masks every day, but I think regular massage is important and really helps.
