Know Yourself: Why Have My Pores Enlarged?

Before you start managing your pores, the first step is to identify the type of pores you have. Understanding the cause makes the solution clearer.

  • Excessive sebum type (horizontal pores): It primarily appears in oily skin. It is a condition where the pores, which are the passageways for excessively secreted sebum, have been forcibly widened. It mainly appears in the T-zone (forehead and nose).

  • Loss of elasticity type (vertical pores): This occurs as collagen in the skin decreases due to aging, weakening the support for the pores and causing them to sag downwards. It primarily appears as an elongated shape on the cheeks.

  • Pigmentation type (blackhead pores): This is a case where sebum trapped in the pores oxidizes and turns black, or the pore openings become discolored due to frequent irritation, making them appear wider.

In my case, I have the loss of elasticity type.

I also usually pay attention to skin elasticity care.

2. The Key to Pore Management: A 3-Step Process

① Cleaning

80% of pore care is cleansing. However, rubbing hard is not the answer.

  • Making double cleansing a part of daily life: Since makeup and sunscreen contain oil-based ingredients, you must first dissolve them with cleansing oil or balm. Be sure to go through the 'emulsification process' where the oil dissolves the sebum.

  • Weakly acidic vs. microbubbles: Use a mildly acidic cleanser to protect your skin barrier, but when your sebum production is high, use a foam cleanser with good cleansing power to create a rich lather and wash your face as if you are cleansing 'only with the foam'.

  • Temperature control: Water that is too hot strips the skin of elasticity, and water that is too cold hardens sebum. Slightly lower than body temperature lukewarm water That is the most suitable.

So, I do a first cleanse according to my usual skin condition.

Or do a double cleanse together!

② Moisturizing

If you skip moisturizing cream because you have a lot of sebum, your skin will perceive it as 'dry' and produce more oil.

  • Moisture layering: Instead of using a single sticky cream, you should address inner dryness by applying a refreshing toner or essence multiple times.

  • Non-comedogenic: Choose a product composed of ingredients that do not clog pores.

  • Cooling Care: Heated skin temperature expands pores. Using a soothing gel or cooling stick to lower skin temperature can provide a temporary pore-tightening effect.

③ Tightening

Enlarged pores need the help of active ingredients.

  • Retinol (Vitamin A): It is the best ingredient for promoting skin regeneration and elasticity. It is particularly effective for sagging pores. (However, use it only at night and start with a small amount to allow for an adjustment period.)

  • Niacinamide: It helps control sebum and brighten the skin, improving dullness around the pores.

  • Salicylic acid (BHA): It uses oil-soluble exfoliating ingredients to cleanse impurities from inside the pores.

If I recommend a product, it feels too much like an advertisement

I won't recommend any products.

I mainly recommend products that dissolve salicylic acid.
