I set the intensity to medium; it doesn't hurt, though it stings a little occasionally. One thing to note is that you shouldn't look at the laser when it flashes. I think the effects are greater if you remove hair frequently with a laser, but it's hard to overcome the laziness... so I only do it occasionally.
