Are there any people who dye their gray hair themselves?

I couldn't find a color I liked among the gray hair dyes, so I used regular hair dye. However, after a few months, the color faded and my gray hair turned white again. Do hair dyes specifically designed for gray hair not fade? I'm also curious if the color stays the same for gray hair that has already been dyed, as opposed to new hair growing in.
