When you can't tell the difference between dead skin cells and sebum

I have oily skin, and sometimes I see white stuff on my chin, but I can't tell if it's dead skin cells or sebum rising to the surface. I do oil cleansing almost every day, though...

I also tend to get acne on my chin often.

How can they be distinguished?
