Maybe it's because I'm clumsy, but I found this club-shaped design easier to apply. I like to curl my lashes really tight, but if they are long, the ones on the sides keep getting swiped up and drooping. This one is great for curling each lash individually.

So, I think I only use this shape because the short ones are easier for me to control. Holika Holika has this shape, but I haven't been able to try it yet (they say there is no powder flying around).

Usually, I apply mascara horizontally across my entire lash line. But with this one, I apply it at a right angle, lifting each lash individually. I think that's why it smudges less or I mess up less.
