How to maintain eyelashes

I usually apply mascara like this: eyelash curler -> mascara base -> volume mascara -> longening mascara, but the staying power isn't very good. I heard it might be a problem with the curler, so I bought a Kai portable curler recently, but are there any other things I could improve?
