Is it okay to have a lip gloss that has never been opened?

While cleaning the house, I found a brand new lip gloss that had never been opened. The packaging was still intact and it was completely unopened, so I felt like I had struck gold, but when I checked, I found that the expiration date had already passed.

I thought that with cosmetics, I only needed to worry about the expiration date after opening, but should I not use it even in this case? I feel like it might be okay if it's unopened, but since it's a product applied to the lips, I feel uneasy about it, so I'm conflicted.

Has anyone ever used an expired lip gloss, even if it is unopened?
I would appreciate your experience or advice on whether it was okay to just use it or if it is better to throw it away 🙏
