The time for boiling eggs is ambiguous

I put water on the stove to boil the eggs.
I am always confused about how many minutes is appropriate.
I was thinking of leaving it a little longer, but I just took it out.
I try to make it soft-boiled, but I think it might not be cooked through, so I leave it in a little longer, and it always ends up overcooked lol
