I'm a beginner at highlighter. Where should I apply it for a natural look?

I usually just focus on base makeup and have rarely used highlighter, but lately I've been seeing how pretty subtle glow looks, so I want to give it a try! However, I'm worried that if I apply it wrong, my face might look too shiny or my pores might stand out even more.

I know I should apply it to the upper cheekbones or the bridge of the nose, but I'm wondering exactly where to apply it for a natural look. In particular, I want to add volume to my face, but I find overly heavy makeup burdensome, so I want to achieve a natural finish.

I'd also like recommendations for textures and shades that are suitable for someone using highlighter for the first time! I'm also curious which types—powder, stick, or liquid—are easiest for beginners to use.😊
