Please tell me how to apply highlighter beautifully to uneven skin.

Hello. I am not a student going through puberty, but I am still struggling with skin troubles. It is not cystic acne, but my skin is patchy and I get occasional pimples, so my skin texture isn't exactly smooth. However, I enjoy watching and trying beauty content on YouTube and Instagram. I also love applying makeup and enjoy going for a full look. That is why I can't seem to give up highlighter; however, since my skin isn't smooth, I feel like applying it just makes my flaws stand out more. What kind of highlighter would be best for skin with uneven texture and patchiness? Should I use a powdery one, or a cream formula? Please tell me how to apply highlighter beautifully on acne-prone skin.
