How to Deal with Frostbite in Winter! Let's Learn in Advance
I imagine some of you may have suffered frostbite while skating in the fields when you were young. You should have come over to a heater to warm up and eat some warm snacks while skating, but perhaps some of you were so excited that you forgot your feet were frozen solid and just kept skating. You have likely experienced that itchy and tingling sensation when warming your feet in front of a heater after playing outside in the cold for a long time. In such cases, it takes at least an hour to thaw the frozen areas. With the weather suddenly turning cold these days, caution is needed regarding winter frostbite.
Why do frostbite occur?
Frostbite is a condition caused by the cessation of blood supply to the skin due to prolonged exposure to severe cold, typically between -2 and -10 degrees Celsius. In severe cases, amputation may be necessary, so caution is required. It is said that frostbite is more common in older individuals and those with poor blood circulation than in younger people. Therefore, caution is necessary when young children participate in winter sports activities. Frostbite can be classified into grades 1 through 4. Grade 1 frostbite involves mild bleeding and swelling; Grade 2 frostbite is accompanied by hyperemia and necrosis; Grade 3 involves necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue; and Grade 4 frostbite involves necrosis extending beyond the subcutaneous tissue to the muscles and skeletal system.
Frostbite Prevention Methods
Frostbite primarily affects exposed areas such as the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes. It is said that wearing earmuffs, gloves, and two pairs of thin socks can help prevent frostbite. When engaging in winter sports like hiking, skiing, or snowboarding, it is crucial to keep your body warm, and taking breaks to warm up is paramount. If your clothes or socks get wet, you must remove them immediately, dry them, and put them back on to prevent frostbite. If you suffer frostbite on your feet, it is important to soak them in warm water rather than hot water and continuously pour warm water over them until sensation returns and the feet turn red. I hope you take care of your health this winter through proper rest. :)
