Hair loss occurs due to a disruption in the hair growth cycle, during which hair grows, falls out, and new hair grows. The typical hair cycle lasts 2 to 6 years, during which time the hair grows long and thick. However, if the cycle is disrupted, growth is impaired, causing the hair to thin out and eventually fall out. Causes of hair loss include hormonal imbalances, stress, an unbalanced diet, alcohol consumption and smoking, and ultraviolet rays.
