Calling all those who dread summer because of underarm sweat!
I really love the vibrant mood of summer, but the summer heat is truly a nightmare. My skin, which reacts sensitively to the hot sun, is a problem, but the greater torment is the sweat. I am particularly tormented by underarm sweat. It has been more than a few times when I was embarrassed to find my T-shirt damp without even realizing it. I spent my days wearing a cardigan even in the sweltering heat, and avoiding T-shirts with tight armholes or blouses made of thin materials. I didn't want to live such a miserable life anymore. So, this summer, I decided to get 'underarm Botox' to properly resolve this chronic problem.
It’s not that I hadn’t considered getting the procedure because I was unaware of "underarm sweat Botox." I had known about it for quite some time, but due to a celebrity’s anecdote heard on a variety show, I held the misconception that "Botox to reduce sweat = a procedure to absolutely never do." Specifically, the misconception was that sweat would erupt in unexpected places, not the treated area. According to Director Yoon Soo-jung of Yoon Soo-jung Clinic, this side effect is called "compensatory hyperhidrosis." This means that when sweat production in a specific area decreases, the body releases sweat elsewhere in an effort to regulate body temperature. However! In most cases, patients do not complain of this side effect. It is said to be an extremely rare occurrence.
The editor also did not experience this 'compensatory hyperhidrosis' after the procedure. Since about 10 injections are administered to one armpit, the procedure took a bit longer, ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. Although I felt a stinging sensation several times, it wasn't difficult because I have a high pain tolerance. When treating the armpits, ice is applied near the treatment area to provide a numbing effect. Personally, I prefer ice anesthesia over applying numbing cream and waiting for over 30 minutes, as it is more convenient and more effective for pain reduction. The procedure was as simple as facial Botox.
Everything about Underarm Botox
The effect is also known as 'underarm sweat Botox.' It is a procedure that suppresses underarm sweat using Botox. The effects do not appear immediately after the procedure, but you can experience a significant reduction in sweat within 1 to 2 weeks.
The effects generally last for about three months, but individual differences may exist. Once the effects wear off, sweating gradually returns to pre-treatment levels. Therefore, repeated procedures are necessary. Since underarm Botox is injected into the dermis layer of the skin rather than the deep muscle layer, the duration of its effects tends to be shorter than muscle Botox (jaw Botox).
The appropriate treatment cycle is every 3 to 4 months. During the summer, when sweating increases, it is recommended to receive treatments at a shorter interval.
Post-procedure precautions: To prevent Botox from spreading to unintended areas and to avoid infection at the injection site, it is recommended to refrain from rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours after the procedure. Additionally, it is advised to avoid strenuous physical activity or exercise for about a day, and to avoid saunas or steam rooms for about a week. Since Botox is sensitive to heat, exposure to heat may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Although the procedure is safe, temporary muscle weakness, pain, bruising, redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site may occur. Folliculitis may rarely develop; in such cases, it is recommended to visit the clinic immediately for appropriate treatment. A side effect called "compensatory hyperhidrosis," where sweating occurs in areas other than the armpits, is even rarer than the side effects described above.
The cost is more than double that of jaw Botox. This is partly because more than double the dosage is used, but also because the procedure itself is more complex and time-consuming, resulting in a difference in the doctor's fee. If you find a clinic where the price does not differ significantly from jaw Botox, you should assume that the clinic is either waiving the doctor's fee as a marketing tactic, diluting the Botox to reduce the dosage, or running a temporary promotion to attract patients.
Q&A
Can I see results if I get Botox in any area where sweating is a concern?
Botox can be administered to almost any area with sweat glands. However, in the case of the face, such as the philtrum, care must be taken to avoid deformation of the lip shape, and Botox is also used for hyperhidrosis of the palms and soles. However, since the hands and feet can be very painful, surgery for hyperhidrosis is recommended rather than Botox if the condition is severe.
