마스크만 믿음 큰일나겠네요 선크림은 필수
Are masks really sufficient for UV protection?
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is divided into UVA, UVB, and UVC, but it is UVA and UVB that affect the skin. UVB is the primary cause of sunburn, while UVA is the primary cause of pigmentation. Furthermore, UVB causes direct damage to DNA, whereas UVA causes indirect damage by generating reactive oxygen species. Due to its long wavelength, UVA penetrates deep into the skin, inducing systemic immunosuppression and is known to be involved in photocarcinogenesis. Therefore, it is necessary to take active care to protect against UV rays when exposed to them.
The level of UV protection provided by fabrics, such as masks, is indicated by the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). When wearing clothing, a UPF of 30 to 40 or higher blocks approximately 97% of UV rays, providing sufficient protection. Cotton t-shirts have a UPF of around 5–9, thick clothing like jeans has a UPF of 100, and thin mesh like stockings has a UPF of about 2. Masks made of non-woven fabric have a UPF of 15 or lower, which is insufficient for UV protection.
Recently, several brands have launched and are selling UPF 50+ masks.
